B.L.A.C.K. is an Afrocentric homeschooling community dedicated to increasing black awareness, cultural expression, and self pride in the homeschooling community. We offer classes in African American history, art, and literature for homeschoolers in the Washington, D.C. area based on the African Centered Educational model. We facilitate hands-on training by nationally recognized education specialists and disseminate information via the B.L.A.C.K. blog on how to infuse African culture and history in the traditional American education. Our mission is to increase awareness of the African Centered Educational model and to share the positive results we are witnessing in B.L.A.C.K. students who are reconnecting with the truth, beauty, and grace of the African heritage and culture.

Why Grace Abounding?

From the Core Knowledge Foundation.....

Too often, the astonishingly rich legacy of African-American literature has been glossed over in summary treatments in 11th-grade American literature survey courses. Too often, the equally rich legacies of African-American music and art have been ignored altogether by schools or, at best, relegated to special events for Black History Month. Now, at last, this can all change due to the publication of a definitive text and resource book on African-American cultural heritage, published by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Core Knowledge Foundation. Vetted by leading figures in African-American studies, this new work has lofty goals – to enable African-American students to view their cultural heritage from its roots in Africa to the present day and to help all students to appreciate and understand the seminal works of the creative geniuses of that heritage.

Grace Abounding The Core Knowledge Anthology of African-American Literature, Music, and Art is "the one indispensable resource on the African-American cultural heritage" that you most certainly want to grace the bookshelves of your home library.  This phenomenal work is a taste of art itself, as it paints a beautiful picture of the timeless African-American cultural story beginning with its roots in Africa from antiquity to the journey of liberation in modern day America. In Grace Abounding, the reader encounters in a very personal way all of the talented African-Americans artists who have boldly expressed themselves, the struggles of their people, and their triumphs through their music, art, and writing,  Negro spirituals, gospel, the blues, jazz, poetry and novels from the Harlem Renaissance period are just a  few of the genres explored which American and the world have come to know and love.  Grace Abounding is the core text for the B.L.A.C.K. Introduction to African American Literature and Art classes.
